Day 45: Tūbingen, Germany/Hechingen, Germany

Today I went to visit Burg Hohenzollern. What should’ve  been a short bus ride and castle tour turned into a much bigger adventure. I missed the bus connection at the Hechingen train station, and with nothing else planned for the day, I decided to hike to the castle instead. Ironically the last return bus decided not to come – so in the end my short castle trip turned into a 15km+ (total) scenic hike through two satellite villages and up an elevation of 234m. (The photo was taken a little over the halfway point).

Up top I took a castle tour and had some Maultasche for lunch (traditional Swabian dish). It was amazing to be in a Medieval war castle. The Hohenzollern dynasty (eventually becoming German emperors) can be traced back over one thousand years. The castle had been destroyed twice and it’s most recent reconstruction completed in 1867.
